Supplements
There is a lot of emphisis on supplements within the health and fitness industry, but what do we actually need, and what are we just led to believe we need?
The supplement industry is a multi billion pound one, with a vast range of products available from pre workout shakes, intra workout shakes and post workout shakes to name but a few. They are very well marketed which makes us believe we need them, when we really dont.
The important supplements are those that most people lack; Magnesium, Vitamin D and Omega 3 fatty acids.
Magnesium is believed to be the most important mineral for your body. More than 350 enzymatic functons require it. Those functions regulate everything from metabolism and sleep cycles, to blood presure. With sufficient magnesium research shows you may be able to prevent problems like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and oesteoporosis.
A large amount of research links a lack of Vitamin D to heightened risk of heart disease, cognitive decline and even cancer. Studies have also shown that getting enough vitamin D can bolster your immune system to fight off infectious diseases, and becasuse it helps up the amount of calcium amsorbed through food, it prevents bone loss whch can start as early as your thirties.
Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oils) whilst dont help those with heart probems, do help keep a healthy heart healthy! Omega 3’s such as DHA and EPA help to lower triglycerides, reduce inflamation, stabalise heart rythms abd help prevent clotting.
They are even proven to help sharpen brain function, boost mood and reduce joint pain.
So before you spend a small fortune on supplements you are told you need, make sure you’re taking the ones we know you need!
